DJ JM has been producing since 2015. This is his first full release, though he will be a familiar name to many for his palette of powerful, hissing drums, instantly recognisable in mixes. DJ JM is guided by a desire to express a distinctive and consistent character in his tracks. On the level of substance, they consist of recombined and layered found sounds, saturated and overcompressed tonal percussion, sequenced into relatively simple, overlapping loops. What makes them unique is the attention to detail that goes into the choice and manipulation of every drum hit, the melodic interaction between the impacts, the sense of humour and strangeness underneath the undeniable effect of the shifting rhythms on the dancefloor.
Though influenced by tribal house, UK funky and broken beat, Cosa Nostra is not a pastiche of or homage to any of these genres. It reflects the sound of the ETS parties that has developed among dancers and artists in the warehouses and basements over the last few years and spilled outwards, our thing - hard drum.
