Both based in Bristol, DJ Polo and NKC have held down a joint show on the city’s newly inaugurated station SWU FM since November 2020. The show found the sweet spot between their sounds, with NKC’s penchant for gritty, mechanoid percussion meshing with DJ Polo’s love for the more soulful, technicolour side of drum-focused club music.

With venues finally reopening in the summer, Polo and NKC launched their clubnight SteamRooms at the Crofters Rights in Bristol in September. The party spotlights both established and upcoming artists pushing the syncopated bounce forwards in UK dance music, featuring Scratchclart and AYAYA for the first instalment.

ETS-YEYEYEYE came about through this ongoing collaboration. The tracks take hybrid influence from the genres and subgenres that DJ Polo and NKC spin on their radio show and at SteamRooms – UK funky, hard drum, tribal house, gqom, amapiano – without slotting straightforwardly into any of them. Both are focused on maximum dancefloor impact: concrete percussion linked up with dramatic builds and wild sound design. ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah’ became the collab mantra, progressively abbreviated and sped up to ‘yeyeyeye’ as they hit on more unruly ideas.
